Swine flu Vaccination

As swine flu the deadly disease is discovered recently no vaccine is ready for it. And of course the normal flu vaccine is of no use to this disease.

Scientists are already in a research for finding the swine flu vaccination. Several laboratories and manufactures have already got the candidate vaccine virus to produce quite a lot of vaccination for the swine flu which can be tested for safety and effectiveness. The WHO (world health organization) has confirmed that the initial H1N1 virus has been produced and the clinical procedures are underway. Though the samples are ready it takes time till September to license the vaccine sine the quality of control should be greater then the vaccines produced 30 years ago.

Still the decision is going on the matter that which group of people will receive the flu vaccination dose first. It has been said that the people who are most exposed to the infection, people in existing health condition and young children. This would require about 159 million doses of the swine flu vaccination. If the supply is less then the following priority is used to give the doses.

  • Pregnant women
  • Household associates and caregivers for children younger than 6 months of age
  • Healthcare and emergency medical services personnel
  • Children 6 months to 4 years
  • Children 5 to 18 years of age who have chronic medical conditions
  • Persons aged 25 to 64 years who have health conditions associated with higher risk of medical complications

1976 Swine Flu Vaccine

At present we don’t have any vaccine for the swine flu virus, but once there was a vaccine for swine flu that was made to mark the swine flu strain which prevailed in the Fort Dix in New Jersey. Because of fear that 1976 flu was similar to the flu that was caused in 1918 called Spanish flu pandemic, over 40 million people were immunized in the US between 1976 October to 1976 December.

But the 1976 swine flu vaccination was stopped early because the swine flu virus did not occur and the vaccine was though to create many side effects especially Guillain Barre Syndrome.

Flu vaccination needs six months

As people of the world are worrying about the deadly swine flu virus, reports from the scientist and the medical doctors say that a original vaccination for the flu virus needs at least six months to get ready and to distribute it to the world wide population.

The main reason for this time delay is listed below:

  • Vaccine has to be tested thoroughly for safety and effectiveness
  • The vaccine then has to be sent to manufacturers for mass production
  • Then the vaccine has to be distributed all over the world.

But the affected people can be given Tamiflu and Relenza drugs to treat the flu. These are said to have a positive effects on the virus and the governments of all the country have a large stockpiles of this drugs.
