Officially South Africa has declared swine flu as a deadly disease. Till now South Africa has three death cases and 83 infections have been confirmed in the Eastern Cape and 53 confirmed cases in East London.

Kristen Brook, 21-years-old preschool teacher living in Greenfields was infected by the H1N1 virus. She has advised the people not to be panic about the swine flu infection.

Brook said that she was been suffering from dry throat, constant cough and headaches from July 26. She said that “At this point it felt as if I was coming down with the normal flu and I slept, only to wake up the following day feeling worse than I was before running a high temperature.”

When Brook visited a doctor on Tuesday she was prescribed with pain killers and medicine for fever and cough. But still she was not able to recover.

“My temperature was not going down even after I had taken the medication; instead it was going higher and was running at 38.5°C and my whole body and bones, even my spine, were very sore.” Said Brook.

When brook was not able to recover after her first to the doctor, she again visited the doctor the following day since she was not able to bear her high fever and she felt her chest very tight. Doctors enquired brook that whether she had any contact with the person who had traveled overseas. She replied NO.

A sample of her saliva was sent to H1N1 virus test. By this time…. brook said

“By this time I was feeling worse. My head was aching, I had a runny nose and my temperature was sitting at 39.5°C.”  The test result came on August 2 after spending a week in bed which confirmed that she was infected by the H1N1 virus.

“When the doctor told me I had the H1N1 virus, I was relieved to at least know what I had been suffering from. But because I was already feeling better, I was not scared.”

“It did come as a surprise to me because I did not at any time come into contact with anyone who had been overseas,” said Brook.

She also added that the swine flu was like other normal flu and is curable and thus she asked the public not to get disturbed.

“All you need to do is just stay at home, relax and do not put any physical strain on your body. All I did was sleep all the time and here I am, fine,” said Brook.

As preventive measure brooks mother and sister were off their work.
