Frank and critical review of swine flu wanted by WHO chief

To review the response of the outbreak which occurred last year WHO is starting a meeting of experts on Monday.

A committee of 29 experts from various universities and ministries meet on Monday to review about the response of the national outbreak last year.

The meeting would last for three days.

The committee will begin their assessment of international pandemic response and they will also identify the lessons learned for the future.

Decisions regarding the vaccination have also been added to the review.

Officials of WHO said that they need a sound alarm when the H1N1 virus again start to spread since no one will know how the national outbreak will turn again.

More than 17,500 deaths were confirmed worldwide due to swine flu since last year April.

The initial findings of the committee will be presented in May and the detailed and final report will be published next year.

Center for disease control and prevention has recommended Oseltamivir (Tamiflu) and Zanamivir (Relenza) as an antiviral drug for treating swine flu.

Work of antiviral drugs

The swine flu virus enters the living cell and starts producing a protein neuramindase. This protein makes the virus to escape the cell in the body. Antiviral drugs blogs these protein and prevent the virus from spreading from one cell to the other.

Tamiflu has been produced by Roche Pharmaceuticals which currently holds the license for it. Roche is the only manufacturer of Tamiflu. It is manufactured as 75mg oral tablet. Tamiflu is restricted to the global supply because of its complexity and difficulty in the nature of production.

The tablet can be taken only under the supervision of a doctor of a health specialist.

People at high risk group should be given the antiviral drugs as soon as they experience the flu symptoms. High risk group people include pregnant women, children below the age of 2 and people suffering from chronic diseases. People who does not belong the high risk group can be treated with the antivirals if they find the symptoms to be worsening or persistent.

People who are suffering from pneumonia should be given the antivirals and antibiotics. Antivirals if taken within 48 hours from the start of symptoms have been found to have useful effects.
